A nationwide recall of alfalfa sprouts has been issued due to an 'unusual strain' of salmonella, affecting at least 44 people across Australia. The affected products, produced by Parilla Fresh, include various alfalfa sprout blends sold in supermarkets and grocers nationwide, with use-by dates up to and including 20 November 2025. This recall follows a joint investigation by interstate health and food regulatory authorities, prompted by an increase in a particular salmonella infection. At least 44 people nationwide have been identified with the 'unusual strain of salmonella', with the highest number of cases in New South Wales (18), followed by Victoria (9) and Queensland (15). Health authorities warn consumers to check their fridges and avoid eating any affected products, which could cause symptoms such as headaches, fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms typically appear 6-72 hours after exposure and can last up to a week. While most people recover with rest and fluids, infants, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness and may require medical attention or hospitalization. An investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge consumers to return the affected products for a full refund and seek medical advice if concerned about their health.
