While I’m slightly biased, being from Seattle, there’s no denying the variety that this area has, and it’s great for families. That’s why this post focuses on the best Pacific Northwest family vacation ideas to inspire you for your next trip.

Now that I’m a mom, my priorities have changed when it comes to booking a trip. My requirements are a fun area, scenic if possible, and kid-friendly accommodations. I put this post together to give you ideas of where to go with your kids around the Pacific Northwest and have an enjoyable Seattle weekend getaway.

To write this post, I enlisted the help of experts on this subject – travel bloggers who know their stuff. They have done all the research for you by going to all these destinations with their kids to let you know the must-see places to stop at and add any tips to help your vacation go smoothly (which we all know can be difficult with little ones sometimes!).

Tips for Planning Family Vacations in the Pacific Northwest

Here are some tips to make your Pacific Northwest vacation go smoother.

• Call the hotel ahead of time to ask for special requests. If you need to rent a crib or rollaway bed, I’ve found better luck talking to someone ahead of time instead of just putting it on the reservation form.
• Have entertainment for long drives. Kids may get excited about going on vacation, but that might fade away the longer you drive. Check out my road trip essentials guide to pack everything you need. I also list a few essentials below.
• Plan breaks in your day. Older kids may be able to be on the go all day, but younger kids may need naps or some downtime in their schedule, so plan accordingly.
• Book summer vacations in advance. Summer in Seattle is the most popular time to go on a vacation in the Pacific Northwest, so I recommend booking your hotel in late winter or early spring if you want a specific weekend.
• Lower your expectations. It was a huge change to go from traveling the world by myself to suddenly having two little ones dictate what we did, or more so, what we didn’t do based on their moods. It’s good to have a loose itinerary, but be flexible if it’s their nap time or your kid isn’t feeling something.

What to Pack for a Pacific Northwest Family Vacation

Here are a few helpful items I personally use for vacations:

• Kindle – I’ve had the same Kindle for years and don’t go anywhere without it. It’s ideal for storing dozens of books on it without taking up space in your luggage. They even have a Kindle for kids now that’s waterproof and kid-friendly.
• Games – There’s no better way to distract kids than with games, and they have ones for almost every age group. Younger kids may like games such as “Would You Rather” Questions, while older kids may like the U.S. Road Trip Atlas to learn about where they’re going. Coloring books are always big hits with both toddlers and older kids (and adults!).
• Fire HD Tablet – Normally, I don’t let my kids watch too much TV, but sometimes when you’re on a long trip, you just need a little downtime. My boys know they only get to use this on long car trips, so it’s extra special. It’s pretty indestructible, and they can download various TV shows, movies, and games.
• SlumberPod – I put off getting this for a while, but after my youngest slept horribly on every trip we went on, I decided to invest in it, and he finally slept through the night on our next trip. It’s essentially a black-out tent that goes over a pack-and-play or a crib so they can nap and sleep without distractions.

There are numerous places to go on kid-friendly vacations in Washington State, but here are some of the top recommendations.

1. Lakedale

In the heart of the Palouse, in eastern Washington state, lies the city of Spokane. This quintessential American town has an abundance of activities to offer for families, from beautiful city parks to kid-friendly museums, as well as a good mix of nature beginner hikes and city amenities. 5. Stevens Pass

The Pacific Northwest family vacation list wouldn’t be complete without a snowy mountain retreat that is fun for all ages. Stevens Pass is most commonly known for its fantastic ski and snowboard attractions, which provide a fun and physically active winter family getaway in Washington state, and it’s one of the best things to do in Seattle in January when you want snow.

Apart from winter, though, Stevens Pass has a flourishing summer season, with plenty of hiking trails and scenic views. Only a brisk 2-hour road trip from Seattle, Stevens Pass offers a quick escape from the hustle of urban life, which is a great way to de-stress during the holidays.

For the kids (and possibly adults), Stevens Pass has a wide variety of ski and snowboard lessons, ranging from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. If you plan on going up more than a few times per year, you might consider an Epic Pass, which allows you to visit multiple ski resorts on an unlimited basis.

As for the proper attire, you’ll want to have a hat, gloves, long underwear, a waterproof coat, and a waterproof jacket at the minimum.

For food at Stevens Pass, I suggest the Pacific Crest Lodge, which is located at the summit of Stevens Pass. 7. Lake Chelan

When looking for family weekend getaways in Washington state, head to Lake Chelan. The area has long been a family-friendly vacation spot in Washington, and I’ve been there many times over the years. There are so many fun Lake Chelan activities, so it makes it perfect for taking the kids on a trip there.

Established in 2014, The Lookout at Lake Chelan offers guests a lovely vacation home fit for all family sizes, some with up to 6 bedrooms. 8. Semiahmoo

9. Lake Wenatchee State Park

Lake Wenatchee State Park is between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass and is an excellent summer camping location for families with kids of all ages and great for family vacations in Washington state! You could also visit the park for the day if you are staying in nearby Plain or Leavenworth. This is one of the best family vacations in Washington state during the summer, especially with the warm weather.

The campground is great for families because they have bathrooms and showers along with playgrounds and good trees for hammocks.

Lake Wenatchee State Park has lots of opportunities for family activities in Washington. The park is divided into two parts, separated by the Wenatchee River. The south side of the park has a roped-off swimming beach and kayak and paddleboard rentals for your Pacific Northwest family vacation.

If you prefer a quieter scene, the beach on the north side is less crowded and developed. There are about 4 miles of mellow wood chip-lined trails that are mostly flat. Bikes are allowed on most of the trails in addition to the road through the campground.

In winter, you can try winter camping, or you can stay at a cozy vacation rental in Plain or Leavenworth and spend the day cross-country skiing, going on winter hikes, or snowshoeing in the park.

On your way in or out, try the 1950s-themed 59er Diner at the turnoff from Highway 2, or visit Leavenworth and eat at Munchen Haus for brats, sausages, pretzels, and adult beverages. It’s year-round outdoor seating with most tables covered and warm heaters.

10. Mount Rainier

One of the most scenic things to do is take a day trip to Mt. Rainier, so put this on your list of Pacific Northwest vacation ideas. This national park shows off the outstandingly beautiful mountain that is Mount Rainier. It is one of the quintessential Washington areas that everyone needs to visit. Make sure to pick up your America the Beautiful pass before visiting!

This national park is filled with lakes, rivers, fire lookouts, surrounding mountains, and beautiful waterfalls. It is a perfect summer getaway for the family.

One of the best things to do is, of course, hike! Mount Rainier has some of the best hikes I have ever witnessed. One of my favorite hikes is Comet Falls.

This waterfall is stunning and is around 380 feet tall! It is one of the best waterfall trails in Washington, and it is a great hike when the weather is not cooperating.

An easy hike to do with the family is the Grove Of The Patriarchs Loop. This trail takes you through a path surrounded by gigantic trees and stunning river views! It is an excellent hike for beginners, and you’ll love this Pacific Northwest family vacation idea.

Of course, the best thing to do in Mount Rainier is to hike the Skyline Trail. This trail has some of the best views of the mountain. It is the most popular hike in the park, and it is easy to see why, as the views are magnificent the whole way during one of the most scenic family getaways in Washington state. 11. Whidbey Island

You don’t have to go far for one of the more popular Pacific Northwest vacation ideas. A weekend on Whidbey Island is the perfect kid-friendly vacation in Washington state. Taking the Mukilteo Ferry into Clinton is a great way to start a trip.

While on the ferry, be sure to keep an eye out for seals and whales while on the boat. The island is a great family staycation in Washington due to how close it is to Seattle.

There are also three Washington State Parks on Whidbey Island that are all worth a trip to visit. Fort Casey, Fort Ebey, and Deception Pass all have amazing camping and views of the sound as well.

Camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, and exploring, if available, at all corners of the island. Also, you can check out Penn Cove Shellfish for fresh oysters, mussels, and clams, as well as the local town of Coupeville. Plus, you can also catch the ferry to Port Townsend for another place to explore.

If you’re looking for kid-friendly breweries, there are several here that allow kids, such as Double Bluff Brewing Company. Many Whidbey Island wineries also are happy to host families. That’s why Whidbey is one of the best family vacation spots in Washington state.

Whidbey Island has festivals year-round and an amazing farmers market to check out with locally made goods. You can visit for a Whidbey day trip or spend the weekend there.

The Wenatchee Valley, in North Central Washington, is one big outdoor family playground and perfect for your list of family vacations in Washington State. Surrounded by a diverse landscape of mountains, rivers, lakes, and high deserts, you will not run out of things to do in Wenatchee and the surrounding communities.

Everything from mountain hiking and camping to lakeside lounging and boating, Wenatchee has it all covered. It is conveniently located within a 50-mile radius between three popular resort destinations of Lake Chelan, Leavenworth, and Crescent Bar.

Sunriver has a resort, and many rental options, with bike and walking trails situated throughout the community. Most of those trails lead to a central Village with dining, shopping, and activities (like ice skating in the winter and go-karts in the summer).

Sunriver Brewingis a popular spot for families to eat in the village, and they have a play area for kids inside too.

You’ll also find two aquatic centers with a mix of waterparks, rock climbing walls, and tubing hills in Sunriver. One of them even has Oregon’s only Flowrider!

Hike to nearby waterfalls, explore a lava cave, or watch the stars in the Sunriver Observatory to create special family memories. Many of the rentals offer complimentary bikes, and tickets to the SHARC waterpark, so look for those extras when booking.

We always run into deer on our bike rides, and the sunsets are magical. There are plenty of low-cost activities in the area, but enjoy a white water rafting trip or head down to the stables for some horseback riding for splurge activities.

There are plenty of golfing options for young and old as well. It makes a perfect week away for families with kids of all ages!

14. Pacific City

Give yourself some blissful beach views and your children a nature-made playground with a trip to Pacific City, Oregon. Located about a half-hour south of Tillamook, this off-the-beaten-path beach town is a gem for familiestraveling along the coast for a road trip on the Oregon coast.

Kids will love the secluded beaches and sand dunes of differing sizes, though most of your attention will likely be on the massive one to the north. The main beach in Pacific City is located by a hotel and restaurant and has a decent-sized parking lot.

But as soon as you go down the small sand dune at the start of the beach, you can barely notice the hustle and bustle behind you. Instead, you’ll just enjoy the massive rock in the middle of the bay, the soft sand, and the small tidal pools to splash in if the tide is out, making it perfect for Pacific Northwest vacations for families.

The large sand dune that’s part of Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area to the north of the bay is a fun journey if your kids are old enough to navigate the steep dune. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the top, and lots of fun to slide back down!

Toddlers and preschoolers may prefer the smaller sand dunes along the back of the beach during this Pacific Northwest family vacation. For a crowd-free beach experience, head a bit farther down the coast to Bob Straub State Park, where you can find hiking trails and a short path to a beach that usually doesn’t have many people on it.

15. Bend

Bend, Oregon, is a fun getaway for families, couples, or singles. The city itself has more than 20 breweries, a burgeoning downtown area, and a constant influx of young people and families moving to town.

In the summer, you can float the Deschutes River right through the Old Mill District, you can golf at one of the dozens of resorts in and around the city, and you can find hundreds of hikes within an hour of downtown Bend (and even a few within city limits).

One of those hikes is a short 1.5-mile walk into the Tamolitch Blue Pool, a bright blue lake right off the McKenzie Highway. There are longer hikes, includingone to the top of the South Sister mountain and a hike up Smith Rock, a rock formation formed by a volcano millions of years ago.

In the winter, there are plenty of opportunities to ski in the Bend area for a fun Pacific Northwest family vacation. Mount Bachelor is the main area ski resort, and people from all over the world visit Bend to ski in Central Oregon.

There are plenty of opportunities for families to ski, whether it’s been a lifelong hobby or you are brand new to it. For the more experienced, you can also ski South Sister as well.

Bend is also home to the last Blockbuster on earth! Ten years ago, Bend was a small Central Oregon town. But now, it’s considered a growing city and a great vacation spot.

16. Arch Cape

When you need a Pacific Northwest family vacation idea, check out Arch Cape. One of my favorite stops was spending a couple of days here, where we rented a house right on the beach. This is the perfect weekend getaway from Seattle.

Arch Cape is a quiet beach town located just 10 minutes south of the more popular seaside town, Cannon Beach. We decided to rent a beach house to take advantage of the Pacific Ocean views and made sure to walk along the beach in the mornings and late afternoons, as well as sit on the back deck to watch thesunset.

Hug Point State Park is just a couple of minutes away and provides families with short hiking trails along the coastline, ocean cliff views, and caves right on the beach.

Since Arch Cape is located only 10 minutes away from Cannon Beach, families will enjoy visiting during low tide to walk to Haystack Rock or stroll the downtown area, which is home to some delicious food and local shops.

Just 45 minutes away is the Tillamook Creamery, which is home to a cheese factory that can be toured for free. In addition to touring the factory, families will sample loads of cheese options and can choose to eat breakfast, lunch, or some fresh Tillamook ice cream. Arch Cape makes a perfect home base for your Oregon explorations or as a stop on aPacific Northwest Road Trip.

If you’re looking for a Pacific Northwest family destination, Eugene, Oregon, is an excellent choice! Pacific Northwest Getaways in British Columbia

I have always loved exploring Canada, and it’s great for families of all ages. There are many advantages of visiting – beautiful landscape, sometimes cheaper shopping depending on the dollar, and of course, Tim Hortons (my kids’ favorite!). Here are some cities and resorts in British Columbia to explore for a family vacation in Canada that you can reach from a Seattle to Vancouver road trip.

18. Parksville

Parksville, BC, may not be as well-known as Victoria (think Butchart Gardens, where I often take a Victoria, BC day trip from Seattle) or Vancouver (think mainland Canada), but it’s a hidden gem that needs to be on your Pacific Northwest family vacation itinerary. You can take a fun road trip to Vancouver Island along the way.

I’m talking about Parksville Beach. The view from our balcony was spectacular at all times of day, including low tide, high tide, and sunset beauty. Experiencing the sand, tide pools, and water firsthand, however, is yet another experience.

Your family, like ours, can have hours of fun just walking around and exploring the vast flat sandy beach.

Beyond Parksville Beach and The Beach Club Resort are more natural (and man-made) wonders that families will enjoy. Provincial parks (like U.S. state parks) are just a short drive away and offer old forest, easy hiking, and rushing rivers and waterfalls. Goats on Roof Old Country Market offers goats on the roof and a country market…yes, seriously, check it out!

When your family gets hungry, try Serious Coffee for breakfast, Old Country Market for lunch, and local grocery stores for Canadian favorites, and a picnic dinner on the beach or on your hotel room balcony.

Another Canadian classic you have to try is poutine, which you won’t regret. And, before you leave Canada, make sure to stop by a Tim Hortons for a treat!
